Blue Penguin Wines are made in the beautiful coastal village of Penguin, on the North West coast of Tasmania. We make wine from grapes we grow and from select fruit we purchase from grape producers close by. Our vineyard overlooks the Bass Strait, the turbulent stretch of ocean that separates our island from mainland Australia. The cool, sea-side climate of Penguin makes it an ideal location for making and aging wines.
Our specialty is producing premium cool-climate wines. We started our Penguin winery in 2008, selling our wines through a small café we owned in downtown Penguin.
Our wines are premium, but our prices aren’t. We are one of the few independent, small winemakers who actually make our own wine—we do not use contract winemakers. By cutting out the contractor, we cut a huge amount from the costs to produce a bottle of wine. This allows us to provide very high-quality wines at moderate prices. We’re also able to tell our customers, with confidence, exactly what ingredients have—and haven’t—gone into every bottle.
Today, we sell our wines through outlets all over Tasmania. Our online sales have allowed us to reach overseas customers—from nearby Melbourne to as far away as the United States.
